PEF represented at Ellicottville snow sculpting contest

We are sad to announce the passing of the face of the PEF, Blou, a border collie that helped his owner, Jay Monti raise quite a bit of money for the PEF. He will truly be missed by all that knew him. Blou was recently honored in the form of a snow sculpture at the Ellicottville Winter Fest snow sculpting contest. In the photo is another border collie named Chloe.
Roxy's Account of the 2009 Run for Rover
(as told to us by the official canine winner of the race):
“I'm Roxy and I'm an active dog. My owner likes to run too, and we run a lot together. My owner heard of the Run for Rover last year and was really excited about taking me down to LaSalle Park to race the other dogs (and people). This year's event was a lot of fun and the weather was fantastic. There were literally hundreds of dogs (and a cat) and their owners at the park enjoying the complimentary flying discs and the festive atmosphere. Omar from Animal Outfitters was even giving out canine ice cream and other frozen dog treats. That was all fun, but I was there to race. The runner turnout was pretty good and some of my competition looked pretty fast. When the race started, I took off. My owners held me back a little knowing that I don't pace myself very well. I was able to maintain my lead over the females in the race with only a couple of males ahead of me. When I finished, I was greeted by the 5k race coordinator who gave me a lovely garland made of last year's race medals. Soon after, at the award ceremony, I was given another medal for being the fastest female in the race, and my owner was given a gift card from Fleet Feet Sports as well as a new book, Vetting (www.pdfpub.com), written by a local veterinarian. I was so excited I had to give the handsome bearded race
coordinator a big wet kiss on the lips. I don't think he was expecting it, but I don't think he minded too much. I hope my owner takes me back to the Run for Rover next year because it is a great party for dogs. The staff from the Buffalo Animal Shelter (where she adopted me a couple years ago) was there along with many other animal welfare organizations. Many animal supply vendors were there selling all sorts of interesting items. I even got blessed by local pet communicator Reverend Renee Karen just before the pet walle The costume contest was very interesting. The Mecee, Linda Pellegrino picked a dog wearing a pink inflatable bathing suit for the prize from Animal Outfitters. Fisher-Price sponsored a race for kids (which I could have easily won). The fun went on and on.”
All in all the 2009 Run for Rover was a huge success raising over $6000 for the Pet Emergency Fund and raising awareness for pets in general. We didn’t raise as much money as last year due to fewer corporate sponsors in this difficult economic time but we are still incredibly happy with what we did raise and at the turnout. We hope to make next year’s event bigger and better and are confident the economy will turn around by then. In this difficult time pet owners in the WNY area are going to need the fund more than ever so thank you to all who participate and donated their time and money. A huge thank you goes out to all the volunteers that helped use make the event a reality. Without them the event would not have been possible. See you next year and hope to see you at the Mini Vet School at UB this fall.

Pet portraits will be collected at local hospitals and at animal events around town. Finished drawings can be turned in to hospital staff or mailed directly to Faces of Buffalo, 320 West Ave, Buffalo, NY, 14201. Portrait forms for this project will also be available online at www.FacesofBuffalo.com/pets. Once enough portraits are collected, an original mosaic will be created with frame-ready prints and note cards available for purchase at participating hospitals and at the Faces of Buffalo website. All proceeds will benefit the PEF and its member hospitals.
